Save the Yard Bird

Who doesn’t love road side Americana? I recently found out about Yard Bird and was taken by his charm here is a little back ground.

Yard Bird came to be around 1971, part of the historic Yard Birds shopping center in Centralia WA.  Yard bird is a black and yellow bird mascot for the shopping center, the owner had a helicopter and built a giant Yard Bird hangar to house it. There was a original giant Yard Bird built out front to bring attention to the center but he was lost in a tragic fire in 1976. This is when The helicopter  bird building  was moved from the back of Yard Bird’s shopping center to its present location to take the place of the BIG brother bird.

For many years this bird building has been an icon of the Yard Bird’s shopping center and towns of Centralia and Chehalis Washington.
Sadly, the building is  starting to show its age.  After almost forty years of rain, snow, hail, sun and FLOODS, his back is giving way. Jason has taken this project on like it is his child I am always impressed when someone goes to great extremes for something they get absolutely no personal gain from just the love of Americana and a funky bird.

Jason Mattson has thrown some great fund raisers and asked Stunt Jake to judge at the miss Yard Bird Pageant.

Stunt Jake, Monica (aka) Bomshell Blondi

and Joy (aka) Lucky Cupcake Hair Clips braved the snow and ice to participate, they had a great time and hope their presents was helpful to SAVE THE BIRD!

You can help by attending some of the events or purchasing some terrific Yard Bird gear check out what Max Reinhart made for the bird no tree would be complete with out one of these :) Yard Bird will also be making a appearance or two in Long Beach real soon hanging out with his Buddie Jake.
